Progression - The difference between success and failure

I've had so many people tell me that they aren't seeing change. The abs they are trying to get are not showing up or they aren't getting any bigger. I'd say 9/10 times the reason is because of progression, or should I say lack there of. Well what in the heck is progression in a workout sense!? First you need to know a little bit about how the body works.

When you workout your body will adapt to whatever stresses you are putting on it. It could be an improved cardio vascular system from running or a gain in nerve connections between your muscles and brain. The only time this will happen though is when you've put your body through a stress it doesn't regularly encounter.

So what typically happens is when people start working out they go from a sedentary lifestyle of watching soap operas and sci fi flicks and then suddenly start running 15 minutes a day. This puts their body through some shock and they get mega sore. If they continue working out however, 15 minutes a day, their bodies will adapt. If all you do is the same workout every time you hit the gym though, you're body won't change.

It is imperative that you keep track of your progress and try to beat your previous record every time you workout. As your progress improves so will your body.

So, progression is the continued added challenge placed on your body resulting in the adaptation of your body to these new stresses.. More reps, more weight, longer duration, higher intensity. Each time you hit the gym you should be trying to beat your previous success.
